All About Our Custom Ties

Striped Ties

At Club Colours, we supply a range of different products when it comes to creating team uniforms. We understand how important these elements are, and how matching colour combinations bring together not only a sense of uniformity, but also a sense of identity and belonging. Today we will be focussing on our range of custom-made neckties, looking at their history, the role they play today and what we can offer at Club Colours.

Usually referred to simply as a tie, a necktie consists of one long piece of cloth, usually worn as a kind of accessory around the neck, where it fits under a shirt collar, knotted at the throat area. There are many variants of neckties, and they are typically worn as part of formal attire, particularly as part of a uniform.

The History of The Necktie

The origins of the tie that we know today stem from the cravat style of necktie, which is a looser style than sports club ties we tend to sell at Club Colours. They are thought to first be worn by Romans, but the modern version dates back to 1660s France, where Croatian mercenaries were enlisted, and seen to be wearing these garments, popularised them throughout the rest of Europe. What began as a fashion craze has stood the test of time, remaining a staple in everyone’s wardrobe to this day (especially worn by men, but also by some women).

Neckties Today

The use of neckties today to indicate the wearer’s membership to a club dates back to the late 19th century, so is a fairly recent tradition. Colours and patterns are associated with the club, forming a part of its identity. The most common for such ties throughout UK and most of Europe are diagonal stripes of alternating colours running down from the wearer’s left. The ties are usually cut on the bias (diagonally), so the stripes on the source cloth are parallel or perpendicular to the selvage (the edge that prevents it from unravelling). The colours used may even hold particular symbolic significance for your club or team.
