Ties as Part of Your Club Clothing

Organisations that use uniform and club clothing do so in order to symbolise their unity.  This concept goes back centuries, with particular colours and logos representing what the club stands for and where it belongs.  For this reason, gaining a group tie is often sign of development and progress of any club or team, tying together the teammates metaphorically.

The History of Ties

Historically speaking, the first known examples of neckwear was in 17th century France, where the nobility imitated neckerchiefs sported by Croatian mercenaries who came to Paris to fight for the King. The tradition was to wear a small, knotted neckerchief, involving into what we now know as the cravat. It was between 1910-1920 that we began to see ties evolve to the ones we commonly see and use as ties for clubwear.

Ties as a Sign of Membership

It was during the late 19th century that coloured and patterned neckties were used in England to denote the membership of a club, military regiment, school or professional association. For example, as early as 1880, the oarsmen of Exeter College at Oxford University tied the bands from their straw hats around their necks. The most common way to show club membership in the UK, as well as throughout the rest of Europe, is made up of diagonal stripes of alternating colours running down the tie from the left-hand side, appearing parallel or perpendicular to the selvage.

Ties Today

Since their inception, matching neckties have become a way to identify members of clubs, teams and organizations of all kinds, featuring in the uniforms of sports teams, educational establishments, corporate companies, and military and civil institutions. Whilst there have been many different designs over the centuries in terms of the width, pattern, fabric, and style of knot, with ties, they remain a fixture in men’s accessories, as well as some women’s, when it comes to formalwear, as well as coming in and out of fashion as casualwear.
